There's more to Crewe than trains
When most people think of Crewe, they think only of its railways connections. During the 19th century Crewe was home to one of the world's greatest railway workshops and was a leading innovator in engineering and design, building elegant locomotives that brought prosperity and prestige to the town.
Today, there’s a lot more to Crewe than trains! There’s a thriving live music scene, as well as a range of shops, bars, pubs and restaurants encompassing a variety of cuisines.
Within walking distance of the train station you will find a variety of restaurants offering a range of cuisines from around the world including Italian at Gio's, Indian at Passage to India, Thai at Thai Corner and good old burgers at Local Burger.
If you are thirsty and fancy a pint, not far from the station you can find Hops Belgian Cafe Bar offering a range of bottled beers, draft Belgian ales, ciders, continental lagers and cask ales. Along Nantwich Road, within walking distance of the railway station you will find Ebenezer's who also carry exciting craft and modern beers, artisan gins and quality wines and spirits.
The recently redeveloped Market Hall offers a distinctive setting for a range of food, goods and entertainment including pizzas, burgers, noodles, Cypriot food, an American Diner and more! Here you will also find The Crewe Dog, providing unique and interesting products, sporting over 20 lines of draught beers and over 200 bottles/cans. Plus there is a quiz night every Thursday and live music some weekends.
Visitors to Crewe can see history brought to life at Crewe Heritage Centre, by discovering the story of how a small farming community was transformed into the railway capital of the world. Take a stroll in the beautiful Victorian Queens Park, or catch a show at the award-winning Edwardian Lyceum theatre, some of the UK's top comedians will be there in the coming months including Harry Hill, Chris McCausland, Iain Stirling and Joel Commett.
If you fancy a game of golf, Wychwood Park Hotel has its own European PGA TOUR standard course with 7213 yards of Championship tees and Queens Park has a very popular 9 hole course measuring 4925 yards, which over the years has matured into a very challenging test of golf for all handicaps. Frequently asked questions
- What is Crewe famous for?
Crewe is famous for two things above all else: railways and Bentley. Crewe was founded in 1840 by the Grand Junction Railway Company as a major railway junction, and grew rapidly to become one of the largest railway towns in the country. From 1946, Rolls-Royce cars were also made here, and today the Pyms Lane factory is the home of Bentley, one of the world's most celebrated luxury car manufacturers. That combination of extraordinary engineering heritage, on both rail and road, is what makes Crewe genuinely unlike anywhere else in Cheshire.
- What is there to do in Crewe?
More than most people expect from a town with Crewe's reputation as a railway junction. Crewe Heritage Centre tells the story of how a small farming hamlet became an engineering heavyweight and household name in under 200 years. Queens Park, a Grade II listed Victorian park spanning 45 acres, was gifted to the people of Crewe by the London and North Western Railway Company in 1887 and remains one of the finest public parks in the North West. Crewe Market Hall has been transformed into a buzzing food, drink and retail destination, bringing independent traders, street food and live entertainment together under one historic roof. Add to that the Lyceum Theatre, Crewe Alexandra Football Club, and easy access to the Cheshire countryside, and there's plenty to fill a visit.
- What is Crewe Heritage Centre and is it worth a visit?
Crewe Heritage Centre is the town's only museum and one of its most rewarding attractions. Set on the original site of Crewe Works, once the largest railway engineering works in the world, the centre lets you explore how Crewe grew from farmland to an industrial heavyweight in under 200 years, ride the miniature railway, get hands-on with the locomotive collection, and watch live trains entering and leaving Crewe Station. The centre also houses three working signal boxes, including one where volunteers operate demonstrations every weekend using a 1960s timetable. From 1 April 2026, children go free, making it an excellent family day out.
- Can you visit the Bentley factory in Crewe?
Yes, though access depends on the type of visit. The full factory tour is reserved for Bentley customers commissioning a new car, taking them through the wood and leather shops and the main assembly hall where every car is hand-built. However, CW1 House, Bentley's stunning showroom on the Crewe site, is open to the public, offering visitors a chance to explore the latest model range and get a genuine feel for the world of Bentley. For motoring enthusiasts, even a visit to the showroom is a memorable experience. Check the Bentley Motors website for opening hours and to confirm availability before you travel.
- What is Queens Park in Crewe?
Queens Park was dedicated to the people of Crewe in 1887, marking the Queen's Jubilee and the fiftieth anniversary of the opening of the Grand Junction Railway, and was a gift to the town from the London and North Western Railway Company. This Grade II listed park is widely regarded as one of the finest public spaces in the North West. Its most notable feature is a four-and-a-half acre man-made boating lake, at the centre of which sits the Burma Star Island, an island garden dedicated to the Allied forces who lost their lives in the Burma Campaign of the Second World War. With a lakeside café, children's play area, bowling greens, Victorian clock tower, and a bandstand, it's a genuinely lovely place to spend an afternoon. Entry is free.
- What is Crewe Market Hall?
Crewe Market Hall has recently undergone major redevelopment works and is now a vibrant destination where food, drink, shopping, and live entertainment come together under one roof, home to a diverse mix of independent traders, artisan kitchens, bars and boutique retailers. Whether you're meeting friends for lunch, picking something up from a local maker, or catching one of the free regular entertainment events, the Market Hall is one of the best reasons to spend time in Crewe town centre. It's open seven days a week (Mondays and Tuesday until 2pm)
- Is there a theatre in Crewe?
Crewe Lyceum Theatre is a historic Edwardian playhouse in the heart of the town, home to a popular programme of top-quality musicals, drama, comedy, dance and family shows, with new shows added regularly. It is the only Edwardian theatre in Cheshire and has been thrilling audiences for well over a century. The programme runs year-round, including a popular annual pantomime. Visit the Lyceum's own website for the current schedule and to book tickets.
- Can I watch Crewe Alexandra play football?
Crewe Alexandra Football Club, known as The Railwaymen or simply The Alex, was founded in 1877 and plays its home fixtures at Gresty Road, which has a capacity of just over 10,000. The club currently competes in EFL League Two. Gresty Road is a proper, characterful English football ground with a strong community feel, and a match day here is a great way to spend an afternoon in Crewe.
