What is completely free to do in Chester city centre?

Walking Chester's ancient Roman walls is one of the best free experiences in the country. At almost two miles in length, they're the most complete Roman walls in Britain and the views over the city, the River Dee and into Wales are genuinely spectacular. The Rows, Chester's medieval two-tier shopping galleries, are free to wander, and you'll also find free entry to the Grosvenor Museum, which tells the story of Chester from Roman times to the present day.

Are there free days out in Cheshire for families with young children?

Cheshire has plenty of brilliant free options for families. Many of the smaller museums are free to enter, there are lots of parks to explore, paddling pools to enjoy in the summer months and plenty of places to get out walking and cycling to enjoy the fresh air.

Several of Cheshire's museums are free to visit. The Grosvenor Museum in Chester covers Roman history, fine art and natural history. Yes, Delamere Forest is free to enter however you do have to pay for parking. You can walk the trails, explore the woodland and enjoy the countryside without paying a penny. If you want to add activities like Go Ape, visit the cafe or the Room on the Broom Trail, they are at an extra cost.

What free outdoor spaces are there in Cheshire for dog walkers?

Cheshire is genuinely brilliant for dog walkers, with a huge amount of free countryside, canal towpaths and forest trails to explore. Delamere Forest, Tegg's Nose Country Park, the Anderton Nature Park near Northwich and the Sandstone Trail are all free to access and very dog friendly. The Cheshire countryside also has extensive public footpath networks through farmland and along the River Weaver and Shropshire Union Canal. Some car parks charge, but the walking itself costs nothing.

Are there free things to do in Cheshire on a rainy day?

Wet weather doesn't have to mean a wasted day. The Grosvenor Museum in Chester, Warrington Museum and Gallery, Nantwich Museum, Congleton Museum and Lymm Heritage Centre (donations welcome) are all free and under cover. Chester's famous Rows are perfect for a wander in the dry, with independent shops and cafés to duck into. The market halls in Chester, Crewe, Knutsford and Warrington are also free to browse and great for a slow, relaxed morning without spending a thing.

Can you spend a full day in Cheshire without spending much money?

Absolutely. A full day in Chester, for example, could take in the Roman walls, Grosvenor Museum, a walk through the Rows, a picnic in Grosvenor Park and a stroll along the River Dee, all completely free. In the wider county, Delamere Forest offers hours of walking, and many of Cheshire's market towns are rewarding just to wander around. Bring a packed lunch and you can genuinely have a brilliant day out for little more than the cost of petrol or a train ticket.

Does National Trust membership give you free entry to Cheshire attractions?

Yes. National Trust members can visit a number of outstanding Cheshire properties for free, including Quarry Bank Mill and Gardens near Wilmslow, Dunham Massey near Altrincham and Lyme near Macclesfield. Quarry Bank in particular is a full day out, with the mill, gardens, woodland walks and the Apprentice House all included with membership. If you visit National Trust properties regularly, membership pays for itself quickly and Cheshire has some of the best the organisation has to offer.
