1. Summer Crafts across the West Cheshire Museums

West Cheshire Museums have a brilliant line-up of creative activities for families this week, and most of them are free of charge. On Wednesday 29th July, drop in to Lion Salt Works in Northwich between 10:30am and 3:30pm to make a handy sunflower art piece, while over at Weaver Hall Museum in Northwich, Clay Monsters STEM sessions run at 11am and 12pm for £5 per child, booking essential. On Thursday 30th July, drop in to Weaver Hall to make monster-inspired corner bookmarks between 10:30am and 3:30pm. And on Friday 31st July, Lion Salt Works hosts Have Fun with Hapazome, a hands-on STEM session exploring the Japanese art of transferring plant pigments onto fabric, at 11am and 12pm for £5 per child.

2. Bryony Kimmings: Bog Witch at Storyhouse, Chester

Following a hugely acclaimed London run, performance artist Bryony Kimmings brings her hit show Bog Witch to Storyhouse Chester on Wednesday 29th and Thursday 30th July. Part memoir, part stand-up, part performance art, it tells the story of uprooting her life to live in a tumbledown cottage in the wilderness in a last-ditch attempt to find happiness. Wildly entertaining, deeply moving and utterly unlike anything else on stage this summer. Tickets from £33.50.

3. Meat Up Festival, Ashley Showground

The North's only field-to-flame festival fires up Ashley Showground near Altrincham on Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd August. World-class chefs including Genevieve Taylor, Adam Purnell and MasterChef's Dan Merriman cook over open flame across three dedicated stages, with the Butcher's Block, Farm and Field Stage and Thatchers Cider Party completing a spectacular weekend of food and farming. As the sun sets, Craig Charles, Levi Roots' Carnival Party, Mark Radcliffe and Company and more take over the music stage. There's also a free funfair, hot air balloon rides, outdoor cinema and a dedicated Kids' Zone. On-site camping available for those who want to make a proper weekend of it.

4. Tatton Park VW Show

Celebrating its 40th anniversary, the largest gathering of Volkswagens in the North of England returns to Tatton Park on Sunday 2nd August. From classic Beetles and Camper Vans to Beach Buggies and modern Golfs, plus show cars, club displays, VW traders and free children's entertainment, it's a brilliant day out for fans of VW, Audi, Porsche and the wider VAG family. Gates open at 10am. A £10 per vehicle park entry charge applies to all visitors including National Trust members.

5. Peaky Pooches at the National Waterways Museum, Ellesmere Port

Bring your four-legged friend along to the National Waterways Museum at Ellesmere Port on Sunday 2nd August for Peaky Pooches, a fun dog show with the chance to win a Sir Woofchester hamper. Alongside the show, the full Canal Town Summer Sunday programme is running, with boat trips on the Diana Margaret, volunteer-led lock and engine demonstrations, free guided tours and the Young Explorer's trail. A great day out for the whole family, dogs very much included.
