Tatton Park welcomes five rare breed goat kids at the Farm

Tatton Park's Farm has welcomed five adorable very special new arrivals, with two of its rare breed Royal Golden Guernsey goats giving birth just days apart.

The new arrivals, a set of triplets and a pair of twins, have already delighted the Farm team and visitors alike. While they are sure to capture plenty of hearts, their arrival is also an important milestone for the conservation of this endangered breed, which was brought close to extinction during the Second World War.

Championing rare breeds 

Royal Golden Guernsey goats made history in 2024 when they became the first livestock breed to be granted a royal title. During a visit to Guernsey on 16 July 2024, King Charles III formally bestowed the title "Royal" on the breed in recognition of its heritage and significance.

Tatton Park's Rare Breeds Farm plays a vital role in protecting these special animals and holds Approved Conservation Centre status with the Rare Breeds Survival Trust (RBST). The dedicated Farm team works closely with the RBST to support the monitoring, preservation and promotion of the UK's native livestock breeds.

The arrival of five new goat kids represents a significant boost for the Royal Golden Guernsey population, which is currently listed as "at risk" on the RBST Watchlist. As well as increasing the breed's numbers, the youngsters contribute valuable genetic diversity that is essential to its long-term survival.

To celebrate their arrival, Tatton Park is inviting animal lovers to suggest names for the five youngsters via its social media channels.

Adopt Emily and help with rare breed conservation

Emily the goat, Martha the Middle White pig and Sensation the Shire Horse are part of Tatton Park’s Animal Adoption scheme. For £35, adopters receive a gift pack including an adoption certificate, VIP tickets for two to a special adoption day, a cuddly toy, factsheet, sticker, photocard and regular updates. Available online at tattonparktrust.org, the scheme helps support Tatton Park’s rare breeds conservation programme and contributes to the animals’ care, including food, bedding and health checks.
