Day 1: Two Thousand Years in Two Days

Morning: The Walls, The Rows, and The Amphitheatre

Start where Chester's story starts. The Roman walls are the most complete in Britain, over two miles of them, and walking the full circuit is one of the finest free things you can do in any city in the country. Drop down into the city and explore the Rows, Chester's extraordinary two-tiered medieval shopping galleries, the only ones of their kind in the world. Then make your way to the Roman Amphitheatre on Little St John Street, the largest uncovered Roman amphitheatre in Britain, where gladiators once fought and the stones still echo with the weight of what happened here.

Late Morning: Grosvenor Museum

Before lunch, step into the Grosvenor Museum on Grosvenor Street, free to enter and consistently underrated. The Roman Stones Gallery alone is extraordinary: the largest collection of inscribed Roman tombstones in Britain, each one a personal story carved in stone and preserved for nearly two millennia. Allow at least an hour and you'll wish you'd allowed two.

Lunch: Artezzan

Head to Artezzan on Pepper Street for lunch. This award-winning Mediterranean restaurant and bar brings honest, feel-good cooking inspired by Spain, France, Italy, and Greece to a stylish, contemporary space in the heart of the city. Spanish pinchos, wood-fired pizzas, grilled meats, fresh seafood, and a wine list that takes you straight to sunnier climes. The perfect midday pause.

Afternoon: ChesterBoat

After lunch, make your way down to The Groves and step aboard with ChesterBoat. The half-hour City Cruise is a genuinely lovely way to see Chester from a completely different angle, gliding upstream along the River Dee past Grosvenor Park, the Earl's Eye meadows, and some spectacular riverside properties, with sightseeing commentary and a licensed bar on board. For something more expansive, the Two-Hour Iron Bridge Cruise heads out into the Cheshire countryside along a beautifully tranquil stretch of the Dee, past the Eaton Estate and on to the ornate Aldford Iron Bridge. Keep an eye out for kingfishers.

Pre-Evening: Rooftop Social Club

Head up to Rooftop Social Club on the eighth and ninth floors above Pepper Street car park for drinks with a view before the evening ahead. Seasonal cocktails, sweeping city views, and a fully covered open-air terrace: an ideal place to watch the Chester skyline shift from afternoon to evening.

Evening: Storyhouse

Storyhouse, Chester's multi award-winning arts centre, is one of the most exciting cultural spaces in the North West, housed in a beautifully restored 1930s former Odeon building on Hunter Street. The independent boutique cinema is a genuine pleasure: a 100-seat screen with a thoughtfully curated programme running year-round, and Turtle Bay next door making it easy to eat before you go in. Order a jerk chicken, a tropical cocktail, and settle in.

If you're visiting between 30 June and 4 July 2026, don't miss The Rocky Horror Show, Richard O'Brien's legendary rock 'n' roll musical making its return to Storyhouse as part of a new world tour. Fish out the fishnets, sharpen the stilettos, and prepare for the Time Warp. Tickets from £27.50. Book early.

Day 2: Stories Under the Sky

Morning: Chester Cathedral

Begin the second day at Chester Cathedral, one of the great medieval buildings of Britain and far more than a place of worship. The Cathedral Tower Tour takes you through secret spaces closed to the public for nearly a thousand years before opening out 125 feet above the city, with views across one city, two countries, and five counties. At ground level, the cloisters, the medieval chapter house, and the soaring nave each tell their own extraordinary chapter of Chester's story. Allow a full morning.

Lunch: Upstairs at the Grill

For lunch, Upstairs at the Grill on Eastgate Street brings New York steakhouse glamour to Chester: perfectly cooked prime cuts, fine wines, a sleek and stylish room, and service that turns a lunch into a proper occasion. Book ahead.

Afternoon: Storyhouse in the Park, Grosvenor Park

After lunch, follow the path into Grosvenor Park, Chester's beautiful Victorian public park, where Storyhouse transforms a corner of the grounds each summer into the UK's only full-time, site-specific professional outdoor theatre company outside London. The Grosvenor Park Open Air Theatre season runs from 27 June to 6 September 2026, with three main stage productions performed in the round, including the boldly reimagined Outlaws: A Robin Hood Story (3 July to 23 August) and the irresistible Let the Sun Shine!, alongside comedy nights, murder mystery evenings, outdoor yoga, and a tepee bar serving craft beers and frozen cocktails.

As the sun goes down, Moonlight Flicks transforms the park into an open-air cinema on selected evenings throughout August. Settle into a deckchair, pull on a pair of surround sound headphones, and watch a film on a giant 30-foot screen under the Chester sky, with wood-fired pizzas and frozen cocktails to hand
