A Guide to Tarporley

As a proud business owner in Tarporley, I’ve had the privilege spending lots of time in this beautiful Cheshire village home for many years. It’s a place where community spirit thrives, nature surrounds you, and life moves at a pace that’s just perfect. Whether you're a visitor or a long-time local, there's so much to discover in this little gem of a picture postcard village, which dates back to the Doomsday. So, let me take you on a tour of my favourite spots in and around Tarporley, from the heart of the village to the stunning countryside beyond.

The Swan Pub

No visit to Tarporley would be complete without a stop at The Swan This historic pub has been serving up pints and great food for generations, and it’s a place where you’ll always find a friendly face. Whether you’re here for a cosy pint by the fire in winter or a refreshing gin and tonic in the sunny beer garden come summer, The Swan has a warm, welcoming atmosphere that perfectly reflects the spirit of Tarporley. Locals often gather here to catch up, share a laugh, and enjoy a delicious meal from their seasonal menu—many of which showcase local produce.

Tarporley High Street

One of the best things about Tarporley is its thriving independent shopping scene. Our High Street is a treasure trove of unique shops and boutiques, all run by passionate owners who are keen to offer something a little different. From charming gift shops and homeware stores to artisan bakeries, coffee shops and clothing boutiques, there’s always something to explore. Particular favourites are the vintage charity shop, Bramble and Blooms and Anuka for beautiful bespoke ethical jewellery.

I always say you can’t beat the personal touch of a good independent shop, and Tarporley has plenty to choose from.

Delamere Forest

If you’re a fan of the great outdoors, you’ll love Delamere Forest—a vast and enchanting woodland that’s perfect for a day out. Whether you’re into walking, cycling, or just soaking in the sights and sounds of nature, Delamere offers something for everyone. For me, nothing beats a quiet walk through the forest, where the towering trees and birdsong make for the most peaceful escape. If you’re looking to get your heart pumping, the nearby Delamere Forest Golf Club is a wonderful spot to enjoy a round of golf in picturesque surroundings. The course is beautiful, challenging, and well-maintained, making it a popular choice for locals and visitors alike.

Sandstone Trail

For those who enjoy exploring on foot, the Sandstone Trail is an absolute must. This 34-mile trail stretches from Frodsham to Whitchurch, offering some of the most breath-taking views of the Cheshire countryside and the trail boasts two castles - Medieval Beeston Castle and Victorian Peckforton Castle. Whether you're an avid walker or just looking for a pleasant day hike, there’s something truly magical about following the trail through the rolling hills, forests, and picturesque villages. I often find myself returning to certain sections of the trail to enjoy the serenity and beauty of the landscape. If you're up for it, why not make a weekend of it, walking a bit each day and staying at one of the charming inns along the way?

The Hollies

Foodies will feel right at home in The Hollies, which was once just a short drive from Tarporley but now also has a presence on the High Steet. This family-run farm shop and café is a true food lover’s paradise, offering everything from freshly baked bread and homemade jams to artisan cheeses and local meats. But the real highlight for me is their café, where you can sit down for a delicious lunch or indulge in one of their legendary afternoon teas. It’s the kind of place where you know everything has been made with care and quality ingredients—and trust me, you won’t leave hungry!

For a taste of the finer things in life, head to Define Wine, just on the outskirts of Tarporley. This luxurious food and wine experience is one of my personal favourites. They offer an exceptional selection of wines, paired perfectly with exquisite dishes created by talented local chefs. Whether you're treating yourself to a special evening out or looking to expand your wine knowledge, Define Wine provides the perfect setting for a memorable meal. Their wine tastings and food pairings are second to none, and the whole experience feels like a celebration of the best things in life.

The Best of Both Worlds

One of the things I love most about Tarporley is the balance it strikes between countryside charm and village life. From the quiet beauty of Delamere Forest to the bustling, friendly vibe of the High Street, there’s always something to enjoy, no matter your mood. The community here is so welcoming, and I think that’s what makes this village truly special. Whether you're here for a weekend getaway or you're lucky enough to live or work here, Tarporley has a way of making everyone feel like they're part of the family.

If you’re ever in the area, I highly recommend you take the time to explore the local sights and discover why Tarporley is so dear to my heart. With great food, stunning walks, and a wonderful community spirit, there’s no place quite like it.
