Mid-Morning: Explore Beeston Castle (20 minute drive – 10.7 miles)

Crowning a sandstone crag above the Cheshire Plain, Beeston Castle is among the most dramatically sited fortresses in England. Long before the castle was built, the crag was a hive of human activity.

The recreated Bronze Age roundhouse brings its prehistoric past to life. With a ground area of more than 50 square metres, it’s bigger than some modern homes.

The castle was built here in the 1220s. It’s crowning glory, the inner bailey, is defended by a rock-cut ditch and a mighty double-towered gatehouse. From here you’ll get astounding views across eight counties.

Inside is the famous castle well, traditionally believed to be the hiding place of Richard II’s treasure. In the visitor centre, the ‘Castle of the Rock’ display retells Beeston’s 4,000-year story. Set in 40 acres of woodland, Beeston Castle is a paradise for walkers, nature lovers and adventurous children.

Afternoon: Head out on a circular walk around Beeston Crag (3 ¾ miles)

In the afternoon, embark on a scenic walk that explores prehistoric Beeston, the Peckforton Hills and Peckforton Mere. This short, intriguing circuit explores the ancient landscape between Beeston Castle and the Peckforton Hills. Discover Beeston Crag’s prehistoric past and spectacular views, before circling Victorian Peckforton Castle high on the wooded Peckforton Hills, and then crossing the fields near Peckforton Mere. Along the way are a sacred spring, the ‘Big Oak’, and a prehistoric lakeside enclosure. Fascinating!

Start: Beeston Castle car park (pay and display), opposite Beeston Castle gateway, Chapel Lane, Beeston, near Tarporley CW6 9TX.

Evening: Peckforton Castle: Fine Dining & Enchanted Stays (6 minute drive – 1.7 miles)

Settle in for an unforgettable evening at Peckforton Castle, where legendary history meets modern luxury.
