Tabley House Collection

Tabley House is the finest 18th Century Palladian mansion in Cheshire. The house was designed by the architect John Carr of York for Sir Peter Leicester and completed in 1767. The Leicester family lived at Tabley from the 14th Century, first in the Old Hall on a moated island, and then later in the fine Georgian house that still stands today. The rooms which are open to the public are the original State Rooms. Within these elegant interiors visitors are able to admire a unique collection of paintings, many of which were created for the rooms in which they are displayed. They include works by Turner, Lely, Reynolds, Lawrence and Dobson. Wonderful furniture by Gillow, Bullock and Chippendale also adorn the rooms, along with memorabilia which offer an intriguing insight into the lives of the Leicester family.

Visitors may choose to visit the 17th Century St Peter's Chapel. In 1927, when in danger of collapse, it was dismantled and re -erected on its present site adjacent to the house. The Chapel has impressive stained glass, with one window designed by the artist Burne -Jones. For those interested in film locations St Peter's Chapel was chosen for an important wedding scene in BBC's Peaky Blinders! To complete the Tabley experience, the Tea Room offers a delightful choice of light lunches, freshly made sandwiches, cakes and afternoon teas in a beautiful, peaceful, and historic setting with waitress service at your table.
