RSPB Burton Mere Wetlands
One of the premier nature reserves in the North West, Burton Mere Wetlands is the heart of the vast RSPB Dee Estuary nature reserve. Modern, accessible facilities bring the rich and varied wildlife of this unique landscape into easy reach for everyone from keen birdwatchers to casual nature lovers and families.
Step into ancient woodland with towering oaks, before winding your way to the lagoons and grasslands beyond. The friendly team in the visitor centre await to inspire you with views of birds of prey including Marsh Harriers and Peregrines, varied colourful wading birds and wildfowl and even the unmistakable Kingfisher.
Views across the estuary span 12 miles to the iconic Moel Famau, with breathtaking sunsets over the Clwydian Range in autumn and winter, and a wood pellet stove to keep cosy in all weathers. Even the new café offers a scenic vista whilst enjoying a range of quality food and drink. Intrepid explorers can venture along surfaced nature trails to several hides and viewpoints closer to the water, but youll be in good company if you come just to relax and unwind.
For families, the Wild Play area encourages den building and adventure, and Explorer Backpacks available to hire containing equipment for a closer look at minibeasts. Entry is free to RSPB members; information and sign up is available on arrival for your visit. Entry fees apply for non-members; see website for details: rspb.org.uk/burtonmerewetlands
