A meandering Saturday in Knutsford

I moved to Knutsford in 1998, a Southerner lured north for university, finally craving a respite from city life and a touch of green. My husband, a born-and-bred Mancunian, needed a little persuasion. However, with friends already settled here and the allure of a stroll across the moor to the (then) Knutsford Wine Bar, he was won over.

There's nothing I enjoy more than a leisurely potter around Knutsford. These unplanned wanderings are the best, when you stumble upon hidden gems, free from the pressure of specific shopping lists.

My journey begins with "A," for Arthur Lee, the town's oldest shop, nestled in Hollingford House on Toft Road, just beyond the town centre. This house holds a literary connection to Victorian author Elizabeth Gaskell. Inside, sisters Helen and Vicky (great-great granddaughters of the founder) curate a treasure trove of homeware. Many mistakenly believe it's solely "big ticket" items, but they offer a delightful range of gifts, finishing touches for your home, Nkuku, HK Living, candles, Farrow & Ball paints, and art. Don't forget to ask about the time their father and grandfather delivered an armchair to L.S. Lowry!

So, where next? Past beautiful St John’s Church (a delight especially in spring) to Kanoa Living. Again, a family run shop run by mum Gail and her two daughters Amy and Holly. The shop opened in 2020 and is a treasure cave full of stunning jewelry, crystals, dresses, and gorgeous PJs all ethically sourced. Kanoa means ‘the free one.’  I just love this shop – I have more of their rings than I have fingers.

Refreshment calls? At the end of Princess Street aka top street is the wonderful Detaljer – Swedish café and lifestyle store run by Swede but living in Knutsford Caterine. What can I say apart from the coffee is great, the bakes amazing and the homewares extremely tempting. The staff are so friendly and like the Cheers song goes, everybody knows my name.’

Next is King Street (aka bottom street) via Minshull Street. Before we arrive there, we must mention Linden Stores. Run by locals Chris and Laura it exudes a cosy vibe offering seasonal small plates accompanied by wonderful wine. If you’ve not booked in advance, see if you can sit at the bar and enjoy a tipple or two.

Where do we begin on King Street? Nearer to Tatton Park is R.I Home run by Danielle and Susan, a home wear store offering clean, Majorcan inspired items. The other way is Willow Boutique, set over 2 floors and home to a large collection of women’s wear and accessories. If you are looking for an occasion dress, separates, jewellery or gifts then look no further. All the staff are friendly too although Michelle and Rowie (who know their stuff and are a hoot to boot) do not work on Saturday!

All the shopping means more refreshment is required and it is a good job Morgan Edwards is next door. Located in another grade ii listed building this wine merchant and bar is run by two university friends – Morgan and Edward. They started their business at Knutsford Market Hall and moved to King Street in 2022. What these two do not know about wine is not worth knowing. Depending on the season, I may venture into the rear courtyard where there is a bell you can press for wine (I kid you not) or sit by candlelight upstairs. Their wine flights are fantastic value for money and can be perfectly accompanied by a cheese or charcuterie platter.

As we venture further along the narrow street, you will see Cotton Shop Yard on the left-hand side down some steps (or cobbles). This cute corner is home to The Cheese Yard, Cocaranti and The Tea Room so do make a detour. Although I do not own a dog and my children are grown-up, The Tea Room has a menu for pups and lots of toys to keep the children amused. I am not bitter at all it wasn’t around 20 years ago!

Let's explore the often-overlooked station end of King Street. This picturesque area, lined with cottages and independent businesses like Bikes N Gear, Clarity Contemporary Jewellery, Chalk 33, Lanigan and Hulme, Dafferns, The White Orchid, B&V Trading, and Neki Café, is a must-visit. Just remember to visit the shops and not the privately owned cottages. One homeowner left his front door ajar (bin duty was calling) and came back to find people wandering in his sitting room.

So, where to eat next? It must be Evuna. Owned by Jane Dowler, it opened in 2017 and is managed by the wonderful Irene. By now, my husband may have mooched down to join me, and we will sit at the bar (our favourite place to sit) enjoying some sublime tapas and wine. Always check the specials board too whilst Spaniard Irene will tell you why she loves Knutsford so much she has made it her home.

My day has only scratched the surface of Knutsford. I’ve pretty much focused on shopping, eating, and drinking!  Your favourite day might include a visit to the moor, Brook Street Chapel or Knutsford Heritage Centre. It may be a Ghost Tour or a Taste Knutsford Tour. Or maybe walking down Legh Road, where Spielberg’s Empire of the Sun was filmed and where a certain Mr Royce once resided.
