Chester Grosvenor
For something luxurious and indulgent, you can’t beat Afternoon Tea at the Chester Grosvenor. Whether you are celebrating a special occasion or just fancy a treat, you can enjoy a selection of sweet creations made by award winning chefs in beautifully opulent surroundings. Traditional Afternoon Tea £39.50pp, Indulgent Afternoon Tea £59.50pp.
Oddfellows
Oddfellows offers something truly unique, with its quirky décor and relaxed, fun atmosphere, here you can enjoy Afternoon Tea with an extra splash of ‘odd’. Along with a delicious selection of treats you can enjoy a vintage inspired cocktail or glass of bubbles instead of your tea. They even serve a mini version of their afternoon tea so that children can join in the fun! Afternoon Tea £35pp, Children £15pp.
Chester Cathedral Refectory
When visiting Chester, a visit to the Cathedral is a must, whilst there the recently refurbished refectory café, situated in the 13th century monk’s dining hall, is also worth a visit. Here you can relax and enjoy delicious cakes and pastries made fresh, onsite. Traditional Afternoon Tea is £22.00 per person. Alternatively, Prosecco Afternoon Tea is £27.00 per person.
Abba Cakes
Abba Cakes on Bridge Street is the home of Laura Alejandra, a Colombian-born patisserie chef whose passion for baking has taken her across three countries over more than a decade. Rooted in Latin and Mediterranean flavour, Laura's creations are a world away from your average cake shop, and the accolades are catching up.
In April 2025, Laura's celebrated 'The Chocolate Cake' was crowned Britain's Best Cake at the Britain's Best Cake Awards, also picking up the Classic Cake Award at the same event. Abba Cakes Judges were won over by its rich, moist layers of dark chocolate sponge, beautiful vintage-style piping, and a dulce de leche filling that made the whole thing even richer.
Kookaburra Bakehouse
Tucked down Goss Street just off Watergate Street, Kookaburra Bakehouse is the kind of place you stumble upon and immediately tell everyone about.
Australian-owned and run by self-taught baker Jessica Reynolds, who honed her viennoiserie skills through Bread Ahead's bakery courses during lockdown, Kookaburra brings a distinctly Southern Hemisphere spirit to the heart of Chester. Everything is made on site daily, from scratch, by a small team of talented bakers and it shows in every flaky, buttery layer.
Expect signature cheesymite croissants made with Vegemite, Smarties cookie dough croissants, lamingtons, and specials that change with the seasons.
One word of advice: go early. The earlier you arrive, the more pastries you'll have to choose from.
Katies Tea room
Another quaint tearoom spread across three floors of a gorgeous 14th century, Grade II listed building, it’s the ideal setting to watch the world go by and enjoy some cake. You will be spoilt for choice here with the range of cakes, tea breads and even giant scones on offer, many of which are also gluten free. Lots of traditional favourites on offer including Carrot Cake, Eccles Cakes, brownies and a delicious sounding Raspberry and Coconut slice. You can also enjoy Afternoon Tea here for £19 (which is also Gluten Free) and upgrade with a bottle of Prosecco for just an extra £7!
Marmalade
Marmalade is located in the heart of Chester’s independent scene, offering a spacious, relaxed dining experience. They pride themselves on being specialists in gluten free, providing the most gluten free options available in the area. Here you can enjoy scones, baked cheesecakes, chocolate muffins, lemon drizzle cake and more, most available gluten free.
Flower Cup
Enter a world of stunning botanicals at Flower Cup, an independent coffee shop located within the city walls up on the rows. Known for their all-day brunch but also speciality coffees and their selection of cakes. Not only this, if you see some plants you like in the café you can head next door to their recently opened sister shop The Violet Palm to pick some up yourself. A truly unique experience!
Patry Pedaleur, Chester Market
Pastry Pedaleur founder Stephanie Peters trained with Michelin-starred The Chester Grosvenor before staging at high-end London bakeries, and the results speak for themselves. Expect bold, inventive flavours rooted in French and Indian cooking, think Palmiers, Kouign Amann, Madeleines, Galette des Rois, Cruffins, Macarons plus classic brownies, cheesecakes and daily changing specials.
Reviewers have called it "irrefutably the best baked goods in Cheshire" and a place that transports you straight to Paris.
