Paul Gough
Even amongst Town Criers, Paul stands out as a larger-than-life character with an ebullient and positive outlook and can-do attitude. He is the reigning Heart of England Champion, the fourth time he has won this coveted title and has enjoyed great success in competitions, winning over 200 championships. These have included National, Guild and Commonwealth titles as well as the prestigious Lord Mayor of Chester's Invitational. He has usually been in the top 5 in World Championships and was 2nd place winner in Canada in 1990. He is ideal to employ with the media because he is articulate not only in English but also in French, Spanish and even Welsh. Coupled with his photogenic looks, it is a winning combination. People have been kind enough to say that he engages most effectively with an audience. He has also been described as something of a showman, an observation with which he is pleased to concur. In addition to this, he is always conscious of the needs of the host organisation, sponsors and host Town Crier and will always be relied upon to assist in any way possible. A competition which includes him is all the better for it.
He was born in the City of Manchester and benefitted from a classical education. He qualified as a chartered librarian and later pursued careers as a management consultant, theatre extra and college tutor. He is a proud father of three excellent sons and has seven grandchildren. He has been a Town Crier since October 1987 and an amateur actor since 1975.
