Celebrating Women’s History Month, Tatton Park will unveil See Me Appear, a powerful new immersive artwork by London-based female led design collective Studio Peut-Porter, as part of their wider landmark exhibition Beyond the View: Canaletto.
Blending advanced virtual production, augmented reality, virtual performance capture, and ambient soundscapes, See Me Appear brings imagined narratives of three historic women from Tatton Park vividly to life in this groundbreaking artist installation, where historical fragments and creativity merge to give voice to stories that history has often overlooked.
Visitors will encounter the virtual characters of Beatrix, Hester and Elizabeth Egerton, who lived at Tatton Park between 1680 and 1799. Their imagined life stories and aspirations have been developed through close collaboration with actresses, creative technologists, and a professional writer, informed by in-depth conversations with Tatton Park’s historians and staff.
Alexa Pollmann and Bine Roth from Studio Peut-Porter said “Current history shows that we need more female perspectives, more nuanced and critical reviews of history. Our collective memory is defined through the media we consume, so let's expand and imagine to fill in the gaps, let's talk about the untold stories.”
See Me Appear is presented as part of Tatton Park’s large-scale exhibition Beyond the View: Canaletto, which explores the estate’s connections to Italy through the travels of former Tatton Park owner Samuel Egerton and his relationship with celebrated artist Canaletto. While initially inspired by Samuel’s adventures in Venice, See Me Appear shifts the perspective to the overlooked voices of his mother, sister, and daughter.
Tatton Park’s General Manager, Carole Hyde, commented: “It’s vital that women’s voices both past and present are heard and celebrated. While leadership at Tatton Park has historically been shaped by men, and our archives naturally reflect that history, we are now seeing a meaningful change. I’m immensely proud as the first female manager of Tatton Park to support this innovative artwork, which shines a light on the stories of Tatton’s historic female inhabitants and places them at the heart of our wider exhibition.”
See Me Appear, which was commissioned and produced by Abandon Normal Devices and Cheshire East Council, reflects on the gaps in the historical record and proposes an alternative approach through creative interpretation and immersive technology.
Louise Hargreaves, Director of Producing & Operations for Abandon Normal Devices added “For AND, it is important to champion female identifying artists in a historically underrepresented arts and technology sector. We’re excited that Studio Peut-Porter took this commission opportunity to experiment with a feminist approach to heritage storytelling, using new technologies to critically examine the role gender plays in documenting and preserving history.”
Visitors can experience See Me Appear as part of Beyond the View: Canaletto exhibition at Tatton Park between 28 March and 1 November (selected dates). Further information and tickets are available at tattonpark.org.uk/canaletto
