Rugeley, Staffordshire, UK

Adrian Basford

Adrian is the Town Crier of Rugeley, the ancient market town in Staffordshire, and the first Town Crier to be registered in the District of Cannock Chase for over a century. In his officially registered civic role, he connects modern community life with history and tradition, fulfilling both ceremonial and public engagement duties and acting as an ambassador for the town.

Having been in uniform for much of his life, from the Boys Brigade, Scouts and Army Cadets to the British Army, Ambulance Service, and now as Town Crier, his vocal skills, etiquette and discipline established in military service complement a passion for history, public service and community relations. As a veteran of The Staffordshire Regiment (The Prince of Wales's) and the son of a local coal miner, he holds strong ties to the area, which he actively supports through fundraising, memorial events and community liaison.

Adrian is equally proud to be the first Black male Afro-Caribbean descendant registered as a Town Crier in the UK, using the role to promote inclusion, break down barriers, and inspire community pride.

His experience spans projects with Vodafone and Innocent Drinks, arenas containing several thousand guests, national and regional competitions, and this year he is host to the AHGTC National Championship 2026. As Town Crier, his mission is to bring a sense of occasion through etiquette, tradition, historical pageantry and gentle humour, combined with good looks, a larger than life personality and a passion to leave the world a better place than he found it.
