Marbury and Anderton 3 ½ Mile Circular

Start at the Marbury Country Park car park.

 

There are many footpaths leading in all directions from the car park, follow the signs for ‘Mere’. Beyond the toilet block the mere can be seen through the trees, continue down to the waters edge (sign, ‘Big Woods’) and turn right onto a broad footpath which runs parallel to the shore.

 

After about 400m, bear right, make a short rise and turn left (sign ‘Canal, Big Woods’).

 

Follow the path through the trees and bear right beside a stream. Continue parallel to the stream eventually joining the canal, turn right here.

 

The tow path runs along the far bank, but on this side a woodland path continues to Marbury Lane. At the lane turn left, cross the canal and follow the tow path to the right for approximately 1 mile.

 

A footbridge spans the canal beside the Anderton Boat Lift. Cross over the footbridge, turn left into Old Road and continue to the main road. Turn Left here and follow the main road until you reach Hough Lane.

 

Turn right down Hough Lane and follow it for about 500m until you reach a kissing gate. Go through the kissing gate and across the fields toward Cogshall Lane.

 

At Cogshall Lane take the field path across the road which descends into Kennel Woods.

 

Cross the stream by a footbridge and make a rise to the main road. Turn right here and after about 50 yards turn left into Marbury Park again. Beyond the nursey bear right and return to the car park.
