Day 1: Into the Forest

Morning: Delamere Forest

Start your weekend among the trees. Delamere Forest is Cheshire's great natural playground, and a brilliant way to shake off the journey and stretch everyone's legs. In 2026, the forest is home to the Room on the Broom Trail, a spellbinding one-mile adventure celebrating 25 years of Julia Donaldson's much-loved story. Help the Witch find her lost hat, bow, and wand, collect magical ingredients, and watch out for Dragon along the way. Trail packs are available for just £4 from the Welcome Point. When energy levels need topping up, the Delamere Forest Café is on hand with sandwiches, snacks, and hot drinks.

Get the train to Delamere Station direct from Chester in just 18 minutes, with services running every 30 minutes.

Afternoon – Up, Up and Away at Go Ape!

Once the forest floor has been thoroughly explored, it's time to head for the canopy. Go Ape Delamere has courses to suit every age and nerve, from Treetop Adventure for younger explorers over 1m tall to the full Treetop Challenge with its Tarzan Swings and zip lines stretching up to 212 metres. Book in advance to avoid disappointment. Go Ape is a five-minute walk from Delamere Station.

Dinner – Family Feasting in the City

After an action-packed day, head back into Chester for a well-earned dinner. Take your pick from:

Shrub – A colourful and creative spot with delicious plant-based dishes (and a kids’ menu that’s anything but boring!).

Ristorante Sergio – A friendly, family-run Italian where the pizza is wood-fired, the pasta is fresh, and everyone’s welcome.

Oddfellows – Whimsical and wonderful, this quirky boutique hotel and restaurant is full of surprises and great food too.

Day 2: City Secrets and Friendly Competition

Morning: Treasure Hunt Chester

There's no better way to see Chester than by turning the whole city into a game. Treasure Hunt Chester transforms the streets into an adventure playground, leading families through iconic landmarks and hidden corners using clever clues, cryptic puzzles, and a treasure map, all from your own phone. Take in the Roman walls, Chester Cathedral, the Rows, and the riverside as you go, at your own pace and with a healthy dose of friendly family competition thrown in.

Lunch: Chester Market

Chester Market is the ideal midday pitstop, with something to please even the most opinionated eaters in the group. From pizza and burgers to bao buns and freshly baked sweet treats, it's a vibrant, buzzing spot to recharge before the afternoon ahead.

Afternoon: Escapism Chester or Challenge Point

For families with older children who love a challenge, Chester has two brilliant options. Escapism Chester is the city's premier live escape room experience, where teams of two to six have 60 minutes to hunt clues, crack codes, and find the way out. If competitive fun is more your thing, Challenge Point on Bridge Street Row is Chester's interactive game show experience, where teams go head-to-head across seven fast-paced mini-games, from laser mazes to supermarket sweeps, with prizes up for grabs in the final round. Both are best booked in advance.

Dinner: Round Off in Style

Keep the good vibes going at Urbano 32, a lively pizza restaurant and bar on Bridge Street with a handmade clay oven at its heart, sourdough Neapolitan pizzas to match, and a warm, buzzy atmosphere that works perfectly for families winding down after a big day.

Where to Stay – Stylish Sleeps for the Whole Family

Round off your adventure with a comfy night in one of Chester’s family-friendly hotels:

Moxy Chester – Trendy and playful with fun design, family rooms, and a great location by the canal.

Leonardo Hotel – Spacious, central, and great value for families on the go.

Hotel Indigo – Boutique style meets warm hospitality, with family options and a fab breakfast to start your day right.

From high ropes to hidden clues, wild woods to wood-fired pizza – this is a break your family will never forget.
