About

Museum of the Moon

The Museum of the Moon artwork by artist Luke Jerram is coming to Chester Cathedral for the first time in 2026.

From Thursday 12 February to Sunday 15 March 2026, marvel at its beauty or join us at one of the many events and activities that will be taking place in the moonlight, including family events, talks, concerts, and more.

Measuring six metres in diameter, the moon features 120dpi detailed NASA imagery of the lunar surface. At an approximate scale of 1:500,000, each centimetre of the internally lit spherical sculpture represents 5km of the moon’s surface.

The installation is a fusion of lunar imagery, moonlight and surround sound composition created by BAFTA and Ivor Novello award winning composer Dan Jones. Each venue also programmes their own series of lunar inspired events beneath the moon.

Throughout the exhibition there is no charge for daytime entry to the Cathedral, although a suggested donation of £5 per person is encouraged which contributes to the hosting of the exhibition, the ongoing maintenance and development of Chester Cathedral, and keeping our doors open for all.

The exhibition will be closed if events are taking place in the south transept, where Museum of the Moon is located. If you are visiting especially for the exhibition, or are travelling some distance, please check here for closure dates.

Museum of the Moon has been co-commissioned by a number of creative organisations brought together by Luke Jerram and Norfolk & Norwich Festival. These include: Greenwich+Docklands International Festival, Brighton Festival, Without Walls, Cork Midsummer Festival, We The Curious, Lakes Alive, Provincial Domain Dommelhof, Les Tombées de la Nuit, Rennes and Ensemble Arts Philly. The artwork has also been created in partnership with the UK Space Agency, University of Bristol and The Association for Science and Discovery Centres.
