Nantwich - Where history (tradition) meets modernity

Nestled in the south of the county – close to the border of Staffordshire and Shropshire sits the thriving market town of Nantwich.  It has always been thus, with a history spanning over 1000 years and wealth built on huge salt deposits, which supported the tanning and cheesemaking industries, it retains some beautiful timber framed vernacular structures and the highest concentration of listed buildings in England. So what better way to learn than a visit to Nantwich Museum.

The extraordinary medieval architecture of its church, St Mary’s, which stands proudly at the heart of the town supports the huge wealth and influence that spread across the whole of Cheshire including Combermere Abbey on its outskirts. Nantwich supported the Parliamentarians in the Civil War and celebrates the Battle of Nantwich annually on Holly Holy Day in January, so continuing to inspire and engage thousands of people who flock into town to re-enact as part of the Sealed Knot.

With the growing interest in local foods and produce, Nantwich boasts a bustling traditional market three days a week, with a wonderful array of old fashioned stalls and traders.  Some established for generations but also a healthy influx of new – to suit all tastes and interests. Its part of the allure of the town and draws locals and newcomers from far and wide to both live and visit.

Today, with a strong eye on the future, it has a reputation for attracting independent, enterprising shops and restaurants and being a ‘must-see’ stop on any tour of Cheshire. Its award-winning restaurants and café’s, design businesses, fashion shops, upmarket delis and food shops all point to a town still full of potential and opportunity for decades to come.
