Chester Attractions

In common with many other places in Britain with the words chester, cester or caster in their name, the city we now call Chester was once home to a Roman castrum or military fort.

This walk covers around 600 yds (1km). Take care – you may meet low beams and different floor surfaces as you walk. And don't forget to take a look at the Rows from street level as you explore.

Chester’s history spans over 2000 years including Roman, Saxon, Norman, Medieval, Tudor, Stuart, Georgian and Victorian.

In this guide, we'll be taking a look at Chester in the Norman and later medieval periods, from around 1070 to 1500. But please excuse us if we don't stick too rigidly to these date
