The Wonders of Colour
Nantwich Museum has announced the opening in its Community Gallery of the ‘The Wonders of Colour’ exhibition, due to run until Saturday 22th November. We live in a very colourful world, and the exhibition, curated by Dr Helen Cooke, will bring to life the history and science of colour, dyes and pigments, food, artworks, stained glass, a local 17th century dye house, tanning, the role of salt in dyeing and more. Using objects from the Museum’s collection and stories from the town’s history, ‘The Wonders of Colour’ illustrates the impact of technology on dyeing, painting, stained glass and food colours. The exhibition continues a long-standing theme of the Museum to bring to life the history of science subjects, and on this occasion has enjoyed financial support by the Royal Society of Chemistry.
The exhibition is complemented by six talks on Thursday evenings at 7.00pm throughout October and November.
‘Seeing Colour: More Than Meets the Eye’ by Glynn Skerratt: 16th October.
‘Dyeing with Garden and Hedgerow Plants’ by Fiona Nisbet: 23rd October.
‘I Can See a Rainbow: a Whistlestop Tour Through the Science of Colour’ by Mark Whalley: 30th October.
‘Dyeing to Know: How Salt Brings Colour to Life’ by David Nellist: 6th November.
‘The Art of Colour’ by Les Pickford: 13th November.
‘Indigo – Everyman’s Dye’ by Graham Dodd: 20th November.
Tickets for the above talks cost £6 (Museum Members £5, children free).
On Saturday 1st November at 10.30am we have a free talk by Cheshire artist Iain Davidson, entitled ‘Harry’s Wall: Colourful Contemporary Culture’, which will consider the Harry Styles wall at Twemlow viaduct near Holmes Chapel where fans have marked their names, believing that was where the performer spent time in his youth.
On Saturday 15th November at 2.00pm, in partnership with the Nantwich Film Club, there will be a screening of the colourful award winning animated film ‘Loving Vincent’ (rated 12A), about the painter Vincent van Gogh. Tickets £2.
All talks must be booked in advance at the Museum shop, by phoning 01270 627104, or online at https://nantwich-museum.arttickets.org.uk/.
During the school half-term, on Wednesday 29th and Thursday 30th October (10.00am-3.00pm), drop-in family workshops will feature activities with a colourful Halloween theme.
Visitors to the Museum can also take part in quizzes and trails featuring objects connected with colours.
Located in Pillory Street, the Museum is open from 10.00am-4.00pm (Tuesday - Saturday). Entry is free to the Museum and exhibition.
