About
Little Women: Wartime Liverpool
Liverpool, UK — 1939-1945 (WWII) — A beloved literary classic is reimagined on stage this July as Little Women arrives at the Harlequin Players Theatre in Northwich, set not in 19th-century New England, but amid the grit and resilience of 1940s wartime Liverpool. This bold new adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s timeless novel, directed by Laura Elizabeth, brings the March sisters to life in a city under siege — where ration books, air raids, and evacuation orders form the backdrop to their hopes, heartbreaks, and hard-won dreams.Set against the chaos and courage of World War II, the production explores how love, family, and ambition endure in times of uncertainty. With Jo as a spirited aspiring writer documenting life during the Blitz, Meg juggling duty and domesticity, Beth quietly volunteering, and Amy pursuing art among rubble and rationing, Little Women: Wartime Liverpool is a tribute to the unbreakable spirit of women during war.“We wanted to honour the heart of Alcott’s story while reflecting the courage of women in our own region’s past,” says the director. “Liverpool was bombed heavily during the Blitz, but its people, especially its women, showed extraordinary resilience. That spirit echoes the struggles and strength of the March sisters.”Featuring period costumes and immersive staging that transforms the theatre into a world of blackout curtains and hope lit by candlelight, this adaptation offers a powerful emotional journey for both long-time fans and first-time audiences.
