The V in VE Day stands for victory of course but of far more lasting importance was Peace.

Quite apart from the ravages of battle, towns and villages across the country had endured six years of shortages, anxiety and in some cases bombing.  Lymm was never a target but did not escape  completely. The war also saw communities working together more closely than ever from the volunteer forces like the ARP and Home Guard to the enthusiastic  “diggers for victory” and generous hosts of evacuees.  All of this took place of course against a backdrop of food and other shortages plus the permanent anxiety for friends and family at the front and the uncertainty of what the future may hold.

“Half The Battle”  – a new film from Lymm Heritage Centre uses rare archive footage from the time to paint a picture of this very different life in Lymm over eighty years ago.
