In a county famous for silk, salt, and cheese, you might be surprised to know that it’s also rife with beautiful golf courses! Home to a number of golf resorts, if you love the idea of combining luxury and leisure with a round of golf thrown in, Cheshire is the place to be.
There’s something special about swinging your clubs on a golf course that’s part of a luxurious resort. The atmosphere, the five-star treatment, and the stunning scenery make for a spectacular experience, whether you’re looking for the perfect vacation spot or just want to get away for a few days.
Here are the Cheshire golf resorts we particularly love. Spend a night, a weekend, or a week… But if you get a chance, stay at one (or all) of them!
The Mere Golf Resort and Spa
Named number 9 in the top 100 golf courses in the area, the Mere Golf Resort and Spa is home to a spectacular 18-hole championship golf course. Despite being fairly flat, the course is beautiful, featuring tree-lined fairways and views over Lake Mere.
We also love the fact that this resort features the area’s only floating driving range! You’ll also be able to one your game in the double-tiered pitching green, putting green, and a bunker practice area.
When you’re not on the course, you can spend some time in the health club, get a treatment at the spa, play a game of tennis, relax in the pool, or enjoy a meal at one of the restaurants. The main restaurant, Browns, lives up to its two AA-rosette reputation in terms of food. You can also opt for the Club Lounge or the spa café—plenty of variety.
Whether you’re on the golf course or enjoying a bite on the heated terrace, you’re surrounded by the pretty English countryside that makes you feel miles away from anywhere.
Champneys Mottram Hall
The championship golf course at Mottram Hall spans more than 7,000 yards. The front nine plays through pretty meadowland, and the back nine winds through woodlands—and you can stop for a quick refreshment break halfway at the Halfway House.
With generous fairways surrounded by trees, subtly rolling greens, and playability across a wide range of golfing abilities, this course is well worth a play, no matter who you are. The course was actually the host of the 2013 European Seniors PGA Championship, giving juniors, seniors, and anyone in between a chance to play on an acclaimed course.
When you’re finished with your round, you can enjoy a beer and a local meal at The Claret Jug restaurant or relax in luxury at the spa, which has been awarded “5 Bubble Luxury” status by the Good Spa Guide. Work up a sweat in the gym, hit the steam room or sauna, or opt for the opposite and brave the cold room. Or, enjoy some couples or family time at a poolside private cabana.
Wychwood Park Hotel & Golf Club
Wychwood Hotel & Golf Club is a modern country getaway that’s well worth your time. The hotel features more than 100 luxurious rooms and numerous suites if you’d prefer something a little more deluxe and private. Plus, free Wi-Fi throughout!
A welcoming restaurant serves fresh, seasonal delights, and if you want something a little more zesty, visit the bar for a drink and a snack. If you’re planning on fueling up after a round of golf, stop in at the course’s 19th hole, the Claret Jug—a contemporary restaurant overlooking the fairways.
Speaking of golf, the on-site championship golf course stretches to over 7,200 yards, so bring your long game! The parkland-style course features numerous hazards, making it a test for golfers of all abilities.
A unique feature is the tee setup. Unlike almost every other golf course out there, Wychwood Park doesn’t use a color tee system. Instead, each tee is marked by the slope of the golf course, with a handy reference board giving advice on which tee to start from based on handicap. A great way to add challenge and remove intimidation!
Shrigley Hall Hotel & Spa
Shrigley Hall Hotel & Spa is a 4-star country hotel featuring lovely architecture and an atmosphere that makes you want to stay longer! The Georgian country house has a range of rooms and suites available, so whether you’re coming alone, as a couple, or with the family, there’s something deluxe to suit you.
When it comes to golf, the course is well-maintained and a great play for intermediates. Beginners may find it challenging, with undulating fairways, water hazards, and closely packed trees in some spots.
And if you’re here with the family or a group of friends, you can take the competition up a notch and play a round of footgolf! The perfect way to have some fun together.
Another popular attraction at the Bazaar Spa, where you can enjoy a revitalizing treatment or a full spa day in the former Salesian chapel. You don’t need to forgo your fitness routine either while you’re here—a full-service gym awaits you.
Carden Park Golf Resort
Play for a day, enjoy an overnighter complete with a golf round, or join the office for a corporate getaway at Carden Park. The resort features two championship golf courses, so it’s worth spending a few days here at least, so you can enjoy both.
The Nicklaus course is the longer and harder of the two, created by the legend Jack Nicklaus himself. It’s a fair challenge, but expect tricky elements like double fairways, water hazards, and smartly-located bunkers.
As for the Cheshire course, it’s the more meandering, relaxed experience. Don’t get complacent because it does feature some difficult tests, but it’s the more friendly of the two.
As well as amazing golf, you can enjoy archery, tennis, running routes, a wonderful Sculpture Garden, the Spa at Carden, and multiple nearby local attractions. Whether you’re here alone or with the kids, there’s plenty to enjoy.
Macdonald Portal Hotel, Golf & Spa
Macdonald Portal Hotel four-star resort has 85 comfortable, deluxe rooms, fully equipped with flat screens, Wi-fi, and whatever bedding requirements you need.
Golf-wise, you have your pick of courses here. The resort features two 18-hole courses—the Championship and the Premier—and a 9-hole course, the Arderne Course. A shorter course like this one is perfect for new golfers to work on their game or families to have some fun together.
The two full courses feature lovely views, holes full of character, and enough challenge for almost all golfers to be tested. They also sometimes run open competitions, which can be fun and add a touch of competition.
Other exciting features include a spa, which features unique treatments like ELEMIS and a relaxation room, a full-service gym, and 3 restaurants that are well worth at least one visit each.
If you’re looking for a getaway that includes both superb golf and a luxurious spa experience, these Cheshire golf resorts fit the bill. They’re perfect for a family vacation, a romantic couple’s getaway, or even a solo trip to reframe your mind.
These aren’t the only ones in the area that are worth a visit. Between the luxury facilities, array of exciting attractions, a wide range of interesting golf courses, and superb dining options, you won’t regret spending some time at one of these spots!

Looks like Cheshire's not just about silk, salt, and cheese—those golf resorts are really something else! The Mere Golf Resort and Spa with its floating driving range? That's got a cool factor. And Champneys Mottram Hall sounds like a perfect blend of championship golf and luxury spa vibes.
Wychwood Park Hotel & Golf Club seems to cater to every golfer, from amateurs to pros, with its tee setup based on the course's slope. That's a nifty way to level the playing field, literally! And footgolf at Shrigley Hall Hotel & Spa? Count me in for some family fun.
Carden Park Golf Resort caught my eye with two championship courses, especially the Nicklaus course—smartly designed but challenging, just what any golf enthusiast would crave. Plus, the variety of activities beyond golf makes it a perfect retreat.
Macdonald Portal Hotel's got options galore with its multiple courses. The 9-hole course sounds like a blast for families, giving everyone a chance to enjoy the game. And who wouldn’t want to try out those unique spa treatments after a day on the greens?
