Cheshire’s salt – the precious mineral on which this county sits – has been prized since Roman times.
It’s a story brilliantly told at the Lion Salt Works, one of the last open-pan sites in the world, an intriguing warren of stove, boiler and pan houses renovated to reveal how salt was extracted from the underground brine lakes and transformed into a coveted commodity. Immerse yourself in the high-tech wizardry of Salt Pan 3, which recreates the steamy and dangerous conditions where bare-chested men toiled over great vats of the boiling brine. Stand at the bar in the old Red Lion pub, where the workers were once served refreshing pints of beer with a replenishing pinch of salt. Spot the worker’s boots encrusted with salt crystals and the sardine tins that, curiously, wages were paid in. Then step out on the towpath of the Trent & Mersey Canal, where salt was once hauled to Liverpool’s docks, the gateway to the world.

Do you, or someone you know, have a passion for our maritime history? Then you, and they, will love The Danny....at over 120 years old, she is a remarkable survivor from the steam age and a most unusual vessel. A small but incredibly powerful canal tug, she was built to tow long strings of barges laden with goods from the inland towns of Cheshire and the Potteries to the great seaport of Liverpool. She made her appearance on the Mersey at a time when old-fashioned sailing ships still jostled for space on the Liverpool waterfront with the great steamships and ocean liners of the Edwardian era.
This is why people return time and again to enjoy cruises onboard The Danny…. Beautiful scenery, interesting local history and all whilst experiencing the sounds and smells of an historic steamship…. But you will need to join us to savour that bit!

And a family favourite is the working rare breed Farm, where you can step back in time as its ‘field to fork’ story brings to life bygone farm characters, rare breed animals and seasonal demonstrations. Don’t forget to say hello to the pigs, sheep, donkeys, chickens, horses and goats! Tatton Park hosts a huge programme of events throughout the year.

On your visit, you can explore the domestic life of the mill-owning Greg family in their home, Quarry Bank House. Or wander through the stunning picturesque gardens that rise up the banks of the river valley for stunning views and spectacular changes through the seasons. In the restored glasshouse and kitchen garden, you can see the array of exotic fruits and vegetables that were grown for the wealthy Gregs' table.
For an alternative view of life in the Industrial Revolution, take a guided tour of the Apprentice House to step into the lives of the pauper children who worked 10 hours a day in the mill. Or stroll to Styal village to see how many of the other workers lived. In the village hub, a permanent exhibition explores the living conditions of the workers compared to life in the centre of Manchester. A tour of a two-up-two-down worker's cottage offers an insight into more than 150 years of history and invites you to compare your life to those of the workers.
On the estate there are acres of woodland to explore. Follow the meandering path of the river Bollin as you look out for an array of wildlife and beautiful views.
Situated in the historic site of the original Weaving Shed, the mill café now offers you a place to relax and enjoy a delicious meal after exploring all that Quarry Bank has to offer. Alternatively you can head to the garden café to enjoy the surroundings with a light lunch or a slice of cake, or treat yourself to an ice cream from Stables Ice Cream Parlour.
In the mill and garden shops, you’ll find a range of gifts, homeware and garden products. For a unique souvenir, make sure you pick up a Quarry Bank glass cloth, which has been woven on heritage looms in the mill.

Ness is located on the Wirral, with fantastic views across the River Dee to North Wales. They were originally created by Arthur Kilpin Bulley. He was passionate about plants, especially new plants being introduced to European gardens from China, Tibet and Nepal.
Ness is located on the Wirral, with fantastic views across the River Dee to North Wales. They were originally created by Arthur Kilpin Bulley. He was passionate about plants, especially new plants being introduced to European gardens from China, Tibet and Nepal.
Bulley outgrew his original garden by persuading diplomats and other travellers to send him back seeds of interesting plants. In 1898, he bought the land that makes up Ness, to build a new family home and larger garden.
He went on to sponsor many plant hunting expeditions and established Bees Nursery, so he could share these new introductions with gardeners across the country. Bees became a household name through its cheap packets of seeds, sold for decades at Woolworth's. After his death in 1942, Bulley's daughter Lois presented Ness to the University of Liverpool with an endowment of £75,000.
Since then, original areas like the Rock Garden have been reinvigorated and new areas such as the Water Gardens and Mediterranean Banks developed by our talented team of staff and volunteers. The gardens are also used by the University for research from plant science through to archaeology. This compliments our education programme for schools and adults using the incredible plants and landscape of the gardens.
Today, Ness Botanic Gardens offers something to visitors of all ages, regardless of which season they visit in. They run an events programme packed with family activities from star gazing to trails and crafts. The gardens are also a popular venue for weddings.
Our garden calendar begins with snowdrop displays in February and continues into spring with camellias, rhododendrons and magnolias. From early summer, the Victorian style vegetable garden – the Potager and 100 metres of herbaceous borders burst into life. Then there are the 4 hectares of wild flower meadows to enjoy that form the centre piece of the WilderNess project which brings wildlife to your doorstep with over 600 species of birds, mammals, bees, butterflies and other insects. Autumn brings fabulous shows of berries and colour from the garden’s varied collections of trees including a National Collection of Sorbus (rowans and whitebeams), and beautiful bark and foliage of birches and maples.
We look forward to seeing you soon, or to quote Arthur Kilpin Bulley; "Welcome friend and welcome stranger, welcome one and welcome all".
Enjoy a delicious range of hot food, sandwiches, homemade cakes and coffees at The Garden Kitchen Cafe.
