Some 4,000 years after the original structure disappeared from view, more than 60 English Heritage volunteers have rolled up their sleeves to piece together archaeological evidence, gather authentic tools and school themselves in ancient construction methods to recreate the ancient thatched wattle-and-daub dwelling that stood here long before the familiar stones of the 13th-century castle.  Beeston has always been a historically significant site – from its glory days as a medieval fortress to its ultimate decline in the Civil War – as well as a place to enjoy its natural woodland setting and spectacular views. Now this new labour of love enables us to venture even further back in time to better appreciate the life and times of our distant ancestors.
