With your luxurious lodgings sorted, it’s time to find some extra special things to do on your midweek break. What could be finer than exploring some of Cheshire’s truly regal landmarks? Take for instance Tatton Park’s Mansion and Gardens. In the Mansion – the original home of the wealthy Egerton family – you can experience opulence like never before. Sitting amidst the nearly 50-acres of pristine, award-winning gardens, the neo-classical Mansion is home to one of the National Trust's finest libraries surrounded by the Mansion’s extensive original furnishings. You can really experience the life of luxury of days gone by in the Mansion. What’s more, the stunning gardens are not to be missed. The product of over 300 years of cultivation, the gardens are home to a wide variety of stunning plant life across the Walled Kitchen Garden, 100-year-old Japanese Garden, historic Glasshouses, and Pleasure Grounds.
One of the finest Palladian houses in the North West and designed by John Carr of York, Tabley House was built in 1761 for the Leicester family, who lived here for 700 years and is certainly magnificent to visit. Tabley is home to the first collection of English paintings ever made with works from Lely, Turner, Lawrence and other English masters. Similarly as stunning as these masterpieces is the collection of original furniture, much of it dating back to the 17th Century.
Nestling on the edge of the Peak District, Lyme Park was once a great sporting estate and home of the Legh family for over 500 years. The house is renowned for its elegant interiors and beautiful gardens, against a backdrop of sweeping moorland with extensive views across Manchester and the Cheshire Plain. On your visit to Lyme you simply must explore the Edwardian rose garden, ravine garden or orangery next to the reflecting lake where a certain Mr Darcy met Miss Bennett in the BBC production of Pride and Prejudice!
If all the splendour of these stately homes and gardens weren’t enough, on the beautiful Wirral Peninsula you can find Ness Botanic Gardens. This real gem, with a fascinating history spanning over a hundred years, is home to 64-acres of gorgeous plant life bursting with colour at any time of year. Highlights include outstanding collections of Rhododendrons, Camellias, Snowdrops and Sorbus, amongst others. Ness is not to be missed on your luxury Cheshire break.
An indulgent luxury break wouldn’t be complete without treating oneself to a shopping spree and luckily in Cheshire there are destinations aplenty to splurge. Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet is your one stop shop for deluxe retail. There’s over 145 boutiques, cafés and restaurants to choose from including designer and luxury brands. Pay tribute to the late iconic designer at the Karl Lagerfeld store. Get a taste for Italian luxury at Furla or stock up on signature underwear and more at Calvin Klein. Check out Mint Velvet, must-have footwear at Dune, Tommy Hilfiger’s jeans, Kate Spade, and elevated basics at Police too. And if all that wasn’t enough, the coolest high-end streetwear awaits for you at Diesel. What’s more, by going midweek, you can avoid the weekend crowds.
And for a slice of Cheshire elegance, look no further than The Hollies Farm Shop. The Hollies is so much more than a farm shop. There is of course the huge range of artisanal and locally sourced produce, with everything from artisan-made breads, cheeses and cured meats to luxury wines, beers, champagnes and spirits, to farm-fresh, locally produced fruits and vegetables. Then there’s The Gift Barn where you can find expertly sourced and truly unique gifts, homewares and other luxury goods.
And if you want something to take home to really remember Cheshire by while adding some luxury to your home, make sure to visit Reclaimed World –Cheshire’s reclamation, salvage and antiques emporium. Here you can find a vast selection of lovingly restored, rare and unique pieces including home décor, garden ware, and antique and vintage collectibles. Hidden treasures abound at Reclaimed World!
Cheshire has some of the finest and most decadent bars, restaurants and pubs around, and no luxury midweek break would be complete without indulging in some fine food and drink. And it’s not just the bars, restaurants and pubs where you can enjoy Cheshire’s finest food and drink offerings!
There’s a huge range of gourmet restaurants to choose from across the county where you can really indulge. You can enjoy AA Rosette and seasonally inspired dining at Browns at The Mere, a gastronomic extravaganza, featuring carefully selected, locally grown and reared produce from 1851 at Peckforton Castle, contemporary twists on classic favourites (including a rotating bar!) at The Brasserie Bar & Restaurant at Crewe Hall, or relaxed informality with elegance – alongside choice grills – at Carrington Grill at Mottram Hall; just to name a few.
And who could forget about the pubs?! Cheshire’s country inns are second to none, and The Fishpool Inn in scenic Delamere is no exception. In this lovingly-refurbished 18th century building, you will find cosy nooks, welcoming fireplaces and plenty of Cheshire charm. The interior decoration is inspired by the popular pastimes of the Cheshire countryside, from fishing to polo. The inspired seasonal menu features traditional home comforts, British classics and modern European dishes; and alongside this there’s a vast selection of wines, beers and signature cocktails for you to treat yourself to!
You can experience some quintessentially British (and very indulgent) high noon treats courtesy of Davenports of Cheshire. Specialising in afternoon tea with a choice of over 6 types to choose from and with over 50 loose leaf speciality teas, this is the ultimate afternoon tea experience. Themed with hand painted Alice in Wonderland murals and located less than 2 miles from Lewis Carroll's birthplace in Newton by Daresbury, for all Alice in Wonderland fans, visiting Davenports Tea Room is an absolute must.
With all this elegance, it’s no surprise that Cheshire is seen as one of the most luxurious counties in the UK – and we haven’t even mentioned Chester, the cosmopolitan capital of the UK, so perhaps you can take a look at our Chester itinerary to further luxuriate. By coming midweek, you can benefit from avoiding the crowds as well capitalise on some great savings! Hopefully you’re fully inspired to book your luxury midweek break in Cheshire and we here at Visit Chester & Cheshire can’t wait to roll out the red carpet for you!

Tatton Park’s ancient Parkland is just waiting to be explored.
This beautiful corner of Cheshire has been home to deer herds since 1290 and they wander as freely as visitors throughout the year. The 50-acre Garden is one of the most picturesque and varied in England, with ever-changing seasonal views across the world-renowned Japanese Garden, Walled Kitchen Gardens and Arboretum, plus the historic glasshouses, maze and topiary.
The 18th century Mansion displays treasured collections of the well-travelled Egerton family including a recently-discovered portrait by renaissance artist Francesco Salviati. The amazingly-complete Servants’ Quarters provide a fascinating insight into life ‘downstairs’ for 18th century servants in a grand house.
And a family favourite is the working rare breed Farm, where you can step back in time as its ‘field to fork’ story brings to life bygone farm characters, rare breed animals and seasonal demonstrations. Don’t forget to say hello to the pigs, sheep, donkeys, chickens, horses and goats! Tatton Park hosts a huge programme of events throughout the year.

Ness is located on the Wirral, with fantastic views across the River Dee to North Wales. They were originally created by Arthur Kilpin Bulley. He was passionate about plants, especially new plants being introduced to European gardens from China, Tibet and Nepal.
Bulley outgrew his original garden by persuading diplomats and other travellers to send him back seeds of interesting plants. In 1898, he bought the land that makes up Ness, to build a new family home and larger garden.
He went on to sponsor many plant hunting expeditions and established Bees Nursery, so he could share these new introductions with gardeners across the country. Bees became a household name through its cheap packets of seeds, sold for decades at Woolworth's. After his death in 1942, Bulley's daughter Lois presented Ness to the University of Liverpool with an endowment of £75,000.
Since then, original areas like the Rock Garden have been reinvigorated and new areas such as the Water Gardens and Mediterranean Banks developed by our talented team of staff and volunteers. The gardens are also used by the University for research from plant science through to archaeology. This compliments our education programme for schools and adults using the incredible plants and landscape of the gardens.
Today, Ness Botanic Gardens offers something to visitors of all ages, regardless of which season they visit in. They run an events programme packed with family activities from star gazing to trails and crafts. The gardens are also a popular venue for weddings.
Our garden calendar begins with snowdrop displays in February and continues into spring with camellias, rhododendrons and magnolias. From early summer, the Victorian style vegetable garden – the Potager and 100 metres of herbaceous borders burst into life. Then there are the 4 hectares of wild flower meadows to enjoy that form the centre piece of the WilderNess project which brings wildlife to your doorstep with over 600 species of birds, mammals, bees, butterflies and other insects. Autumn brings fabulous shows of berries and colour from the garden’s varied collections of trees including a National Collection of Sorbus (rowans and whitebeams), and beautiful bark and foliage of birches and maples.
We look forward to seeing you soon, or to quote Arthur Kilpin Bulley; "Welcome friend and welcome stranger, welcome one and welcome all".
