Greenbank is on the outskirts of Northwich and is the town’s only fully accessible station.

Christ Church evangelical Anglican Church occupies the station house and holds tow services on Sunday. Turning right from the station along Chester Road will soon take you to Odiyana Kadampa Meditaiton Centre which offers classes on meditation and Buddhist teachings.

The Marshalls Arm Nature reserve and river Weaver are a short walk from the station. Directions can be found in the Greenbank Rail Trail Route.

Northwich

Not all that long ago Northwich was home to a booming salt mining and chemical industry which has left behind a rich industrial heritage-the word wich, in old English, means a place where salt was produced.

One of the town’s most well-known historical monuments is the restored Anderton Boat Lift. The fist of its kind in the world It was once used to transfer vessels from the Trent and Mersey Canal to the Weaver Navigation. Although it’s on the outer reaches of Northwich you can reach it through the Northwich Woodland if you enjoy walking or cycling. The lift also has a children’s playground, café and gift shop and runs river cruises from the lift along the weaver but be sure to check opening times before visiting!

Being a town of 2 rivers (the Dane flows into the Weaver near the town centre) Northwich has some lovely riverside walks-you can even hike or cycle down a well laid track along the Weaver to nearby Winsford. Starting at Hunts Lock you`ll likely spot herons, cormorants, swans and maybe even a king fisher (if you`re lucky) along the way!

To find out more about the towns past you could do the Northwich Rail Trail Route and call in at The Weaver Hall Museum on London Road.

The town centre is around a 20-minute walk or a hop on the bus from the station. Here you`ll find a good mix of high street stores, supermarkets, cafes, charity shops, indoor market and monthly artisan market.

There`s also a busy calendar of seasonal festivals including the Northwich Carnival, River festival and Pina Colada festival in summer and the Christmas lights turn on in December.

But if you fancy honing your gardening skills, trying some crafts or want to make new friends then head to Grozone Community Garden. They also hold regular children’s events during the school holidays, check their website for opening times and events.

Rods Secret Garden and Dane Valley Community Orchard, run by Sustainable Northwich also welcome new faces and hold regular volunteering days and events.

For exercise and entertainment Brio Leasure on the Chester Way has a swimming pool, gym, and theatre.

Lostock

This residential suburb of Northwich has a school, church, boat yard, take away and pub called The Slow and Easy just a short walk from the station. Turn left from the road bridge along Station Rd towards Manchester Rd.

It`s also the nearest stop off for the Lion Salt Works where you can explore the towns salt mining heritage in its museum for a modest fee. There`s also a café, playground, gift shop and butterfly garden which are all free to enter and they often hold children’s activities in the school holidays.

The Salt Works is a 45-minute amble along the Trent and Mersey Canal with directions to be found in the Lostock Gralam Rail Trail Route.

While the museum café does serve light snacks if you want a more substantial meal try the The Red Lion opposite the museums road entrance or The Salt Barge which can be accessed a little further along the tow pathe.

Greenbank Railway Station has won a number of awards in the Cheshire Best Kept Station Competition.
