Route 71 is a regional route which runs across the county from east to west. It starts at one of the highest points in the county at Teggs Nose Country Park and extends down to the westernmost point in Cheshire, overlooking the Welsh hills.

The route runs through small villages and towns, and the city of Chester, before reaching Parkgate, a former bustling port on the banks of the Dee Estuary. It is best travelled east to west unless you fancy an arduous climb from Fools Nook to Teggs Nose.

Route 71 visits a number of Cheshire County Parks on the way, namely, Brereton Heath, Whitegate Way, Little Budworth and the Wirral Country Park. The route is common with route 70, 5 and 56.

Canal towpaths are encountered between Middlewich and Winsford and between Christleton and Chester. Cyclists with racing bikes may find some of the sections on route 71 less suitable.

Thing to remember

• Always follow the cycle safety code.
• Check your bike is mechanically safe, wear a helmet and correct clothing.
• Always give way to walkers.
• Take care when merging with major/other roads and cycling in towns.
• Respect land management activities.

The route is signed and please use Ordnance Survey maps. Please note that the downloadable route pack details were produced by the former Cheshire County Council.
